For modern day racegoers, there are few names which evoke such memories as that of driver/trainer Clint Galbraith. It was this Tara, Ontario, native who brought harness racing into a new era with the exploits of arguably the greatest horse of this century - Niatross.
Through 1979 and 1980, Galbraith kept the racing fraternity spellbound with the exploits of that brilliant pacer who won 37 of 39 races and over $2 million in purse winnings.
Clearly though, it was the unforgettable 1:49.1 time-trial effort in the fall of 1980 which remains most vivid. At the time it was described as taking harness racing into The Twilight Zone.
But Galbraith was anything but a one trick pony as he showed so aptly a few years later with two-time Breeders Crown winner Call For Rain. That rugged pacer won in excess of $1 million and established the world record for the fastest ever race mile.
Between the efforts of just these two horses, Galbraith found himself in the winner's circle for the Meadowlands Pace, Woodrow Wilson, Prix d'Ete, Cane Pace, Messenger Stake and Little Brown Jug.
During his career, Galbraith, 61, made his home at Rodney Farms in New York state. His record in the sulky shows nearly 2,800 victories and purse winnings of over $18 million.
